Take steps towards feeling better, and cultivate tools for emotional wellness.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Inner Steps Counselling. My name is Annabelle Wooldridge and I am a qualified counsellor based in Penzance, Cornwall. Please read on to find out more information, or contact me.

Counselling

As a counsellor, I am professionally trained to help you work through emotional, mental, and behavioural issues. My aim is to support you in navigating personal challenges, improving your mental health, and fostering wellbeing.

In the counselling room, I create a safe space where you can express your feelings and concerns. I listen actively and empathically without judgement. Together we can identify underlying issues, by exploring your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, or past experiences.

I can help you develop coping strategies to help navigate your day to day life, and help guide you in understanding your emotions, behaviours, and patterns.

Depending on your needs, I may help you develop actionable plans to address specific problems, like managing stress, communication skills, or ways to cope with anxiety.

How I work

I believe that it takes more than one counselling approach to help and support the variety of issues people experience. Therefore I have trained in three main counselling approaches - Gestalt, Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This enables me to help clients with a range of difficulties.

I offer a caring and holistic approach, considering mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. By integrating different methods, I can tailor the therapy to fit your unique needs, personality, and issues.

Qualifications

BSc Health Studies with Social Biology

  • E-learning Modules
  • Books, articles and peer supervision

About me

Hello, I’m Annabelle and a warm welcome to you. Below I will explain a little about me, along with what brought me to practising counselling, and how I work.

As it is for many people, difficult events led me to therapy. Having another person to speak with who wasn’t a friend, colleague or relative, meant so much. The therapy room was a safe place for me talk and process, and this importantly helped me to function in my life as a parent, at work, and socially. It was hard. But I was determined. And committed! And it paid off.

My counselling experience had a hugely positive impact on my life, and was partly the reason that led me to training as therapist. That said, I have held a life-long interest in the helping professions in general having organised and participated in self development events. It was a privilege to support and witness change in participants at those experiences.

I observed that positive personal change is rather like a touchstone. The change can affect not just the individual, but those around them too, in all sorts of inspiring ways.

And how about you? I am curious what led you to seek therapy. Life isn't always plain sailing, right? We can find ourselves in a negative place, facing some real bumps in the road and unsure of our next step, or how to feel better.

Or sometimes life changing events happen. Life is jogging on nicely, and then something big happens - a bereavement, a job loss, or break up. Suddenly what we know is turned upon its head, life as we know it is changed and we are affected by it in ways we never experienced before. This can be difficult to handle. Managing feelings, and the intensity of those feelings, can be overwhelming, and we might not know how to do this on our own. Finding out who we are in these times, is a whole new undertaking.

And sometimes, nothing major has happened but we can be bogged down with unhelpful, perhaps painful, thoughts about ourselves that we’d rather not be thinking. Or experiences from the past keep knocking, the memories of which affect our life in the present.

Whatever your reason, the fact you’re here and reading this is the first step. Is there anything you’ve read that resonates? Or perhaps there’s something else. Either way, if you would like to arrange a session to talk, please feel free to contact me.

Benefits of Counselling

These can be numerous and these are some examples of how clients have been helped and supported:

Committed exploration can help foster greater self-awareness, which can lead to better decision-making, improved personal satisfaction, improved confidence in who you are.

This can lead to improved relationship with yourself and others too.

On the subject of relationships, counselling can also help you improve communication, resolve conflicts, and build healthier relationships with partners, family members, or friends.

Counselling can provide emotional relief.

Sometimes keeping emotions inside takes a lot of effort. Talking and releasing emotions can lead to relief which helps reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, or sadness.

Major life changes like divorce, job loss, or grief can be overwhelming. Counselling can help during these transitions with emotional support and practical strategies for adapting.

Counselling can provide a new perspective on problems.

Sometimes when we’re so ‘in it’, so close to a situation, it’s hard to gain perspective. Sessions can help you see things more clearly and find solutions that you might not have considered on your own.
